Zaragoza is gearing up for an exciting transformation as modular stadium construction at Parking Nord is set to begin in early January. This temporary facility will serve as the home of Real Zaragoza for the next two seasons while the Nueva Romareda is under construction.
The Zaragoza City Council has approved a €2.59 million project to convert the former Expo 2008 North Parking lot into a state-of-the-art temporary sports venue. The ambitious plan, developed by architectural firm MSM Urban Mater, aims to deliver a 20,000-seat stadium in just four months. Construction is scheduled to start on January 8 or 9 and is expected to conclude by the second week of May.
Alongside the modular stadium installation, urban development of the surrounding 155,745 m² plot will be undertaken. This includes the creation of parking lots, fan zones, and picnic areas, as well as measures to mitigate flood risks due to the stadium's proximity to the Ebro River.
Once the current season ends, the lights from the iconic La Romareda will be dismantled and relocated to the new modular facility.
The plan features extensive upgrades to improve the fan experience and environmental aesthetics. Key improvements include:
Despite these enhancements, food service points outside the stadium will be limited, with bars exclusively available inside the modular venue.
Given the Ebro River’s proximity, the city has incorporated a flood protection plan into the project. According to the Ebro River Basin Confederation, the flood risk is relatively low, impacting only a small part of Parking 2 during extreme scenarios. Measures are being taken to address this risk, including preparations to cancel events in case of severe flooding.
