Manchester United has opted to keep Erik ten Hag after the FA Cup success last month and reward him with an extension to his contract. Even with a poor campaign which featured a record thirteen league loses and the club being placed eighth in the English Premier League at the end of the season, the board has chosen to stand by their man.
After analyzing their performance at the end of the season, Manchester United decided to renew Ten Hag’s contract so that he remained at Old Trafford for his third season. First, it was claimed that Ten Hag was on the verge of dismissal after the FA Cup final Manchester City. Nevertheless, a 2-1 win at Wembley that saw Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo score in the first half persuaded the club to exercise the 12-month option in his contract, which will now expire in 2026.
Ten Hag said, “I feel very happy that the club and I have agreed to continue the cooperation for more years. When I look back at the last two years, we have had two trophies and numerous examples of development from the periods when I first joined the team. However, I think it is important to realize that there is much work to be done to achieve the level that is expected of Manchester United, namely, to battle for the Premier League.
Ten Hag journey into Manchester United from Ajax has been a rollercoaster since joining the club in 2022. His first season was quite encouraging with the team finishing third on the Premier League log and thus qualifying for the UEFA Champions League and winning the EFL Cup. However, last season was super disappointing, and United ended the season at the eighth position, the worst in the premier league and the worst since 1990. This poor season involved a record number of losses to other Premier League teams and an early elimination from European tournaments.
However, coming from the loss, the FA Cup triumph over Manchester City was the turning point. The victory ensured United their 13th FA Cup and gave them a place in the UEFA Europa League; in the end, this victory saved Ten Hag’s position.
