Eberechi Eze scored the only goal, with goalkeeper Dean Henderson producing a decisive penalty save. Palace were eliminated in the third round of the 2025/26 edition after an upset defeat to sixth-tier National League North side Macclesfield, one of the shocks of the season.
The 2025/26 competition has produced several memorable storylines. Mansfield Town, a League Two club, reached the fifth round after beating Burnley in the fourth round. Wrexham's extended cup run captivated neutral fans before Chelsea ended it in the fifth round. Port Vale, from League One, reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 1953/54 after stunning Sunderland.
The quarter-final lineup features three Premier League heavyweights (Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City), two further Premier League sides (Chelsea, Southampton and West Ham United), one Championship club (Leeds United) and one League One club (Port Vale).
The FA Cup is the oldest football competition in the world, first contested in the 1871/72 season when Wanderers beat the Royal Engineers 1-0 in the final at the Kennington Oval. It is a straight knockout competition open to clubs across every level of the English football pyramid, from non-league sides in the qualifying rounds to Premier League and Championship clubs who enter from the third round.
The competition is run by the Football Association and is officially known as the Emirates FA Cup for sponsorship reasons. It is one of the most celebrated domestic cup competitions in world football, known for producing dramatic upsets, underdog runs and iconic moments at Wembley. The winners earn a place in the following season's UEFA Europa League.

The FA Cup Final is held at Wembley Stadium, the 90,000-capacity national stadium in north-west London. The final has been played at the current Wembley since its reopening in 2007, and the original Wembley hosted the showpiece event from 1923 to 2000. The FA Cup Final is among the most prominent single-day fixtures in the English sporting calendar, attracting worldwide television audiences and a sell-out crowd.
Both semi-finals are also held at Wembley, giving fans the chance to experience the national stadium atmosphere twice during the closing stages of the competition.

The Football Association Challenge Cup was established in 1871 by C.W. Alcock, the FA's secretary, who proposed a knockout tournament inspired by inter-house competitions at Harrow School. Fifteen clubs entered the inaugural edition, with Wanderers winning the first final in March 1872 at the Kennington Oval. In its earliest years, the competition was dominated by amateur sides from the south of England, but Blackburn Olympic's victory in 1883 marked a turning point: it was the first time a northern, working-class club had won the trophy, and the amateur era soon gave way to professionalism.
The FA Cup has been at the centre of English football culture for over 150 years. The 1923 final, the first played at the original Wembley, drew an official attendance of 126,047, though the real figure is believed to have been far higher. It became the first major sporting event broadcast on BBC Radio in 1927 and the first to be televised in 1938. The competition was not held during the two World Wars, with the exception of the 1914/15 season.
For most of its history, the FA Cup operated with replays at every stage. A drawn match would be replayed, sometimes repeatedly, until a winner emerged. The 1971/72 fourth qualifying round between Alvechurch and Oxford City went to five replays, spanning 11 hours of football. Finals drawn after 90 minutes were also replayed, with the last final replay taking place in 1993 between Arsenal and Sheffield Wednesday.
From the 1999/2000 season, drawn finals were settled on the day with extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shootout. The first final to go to penalties was Arsenal vs Manchester United in 2005. Replays continued in earlier rounds until 2024/25.
Under a six-year agreement between the FA and the Premier League from 2024/25, replays in the proper rounds were removed. All matches from the first round proper onwards are now decided on the day, with extra time and penalties if required. This change reduced scheduling congestion and aligned the FA Cup with the format used in other major knockout competitions.

Arsenal hold the record for the most FA Cup titles with 14, seven of which came under Arsene Wenger. Forty-five clubs have won the competition since 1872. The most recent first-time winner was Crystal Palace in 2025. Ashley Cole holds the individual record with seven FA Cup winners' medals (three with Arsenal, four with Chelsea).
The FA Cup's enduring appeal is rooted in its capacity to produce shock results. Because the competition is open to clubs across all ten levels of the English pyramid, the gap between the smallest and largest clubs can be enormous, and lower-league sides regularly defy the odds.
The 2025/26 edition continued this tradition. Macclesfield, a sixth-tier National League North side, eliminated defending champions Crystal Palace in the third round, equalling the club's previous best performance from 2012/13. Port Vale, from League One, reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 1954 after beating Sunderland in the fifth round.
Historically, Wigan Athletic's 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the 2013 final remains one of the defining upsets of the modern era. Further back, non-league Lincoln City reached the quarter-finals in 2016/17 for the first time in over a century, and Hereford United's 1972 victory over Newcastle remains one of the competition's most-replayed moments.
