Mauricio Pochettino has parted ways with Chelsea after completing one full season at Stamford Bridge. Following an inconsistent campaign, Chelsea finished strong, securing European qualification with a sixth-place finish in the Premier League. Pochettino also led the team to the Carabao Cup final and the FA Cup semi-finals. However, despite these achievements, the former Tottenham boss will not return to Chelsea next season. The club announced on Tuesday that Mauricio Pochettino has left his role as Chelsea manager by mutual consent.
In a statement, club sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley expressed their gratitude, saying: "On behalf of everyone at Chelsea, we would like to express our gratitude to Mauricio for his service this season. He will be welcome back to Stamford Bridge any time, and we wish him all the very best in his future coaching career." Pochettino also shared his thoughts on leaving the club, stating: "Thank you to the Chelsea ownership group and Sporting Directors for the opportunity to be part of this football club's history. The club is now well positioned to keep moving forward in the Premier League and Europe in the years to come."
There had been ongoing speculation about an end-of-season review after a turbulent year at Stamford Bridge. Despite a challenging season, five consecutive wins at the end ensured Chelsea will play European football next season. Pochettino guided them to a commendable sixth-place finish in the Premier League, along with a Carabao Cup final and an FA Cup semi-final.
The decision for Pochettino’s departure reportedly came after a two-day meeting between him, Winstanley, Stewart, and co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali. The Argentine manager had also dined with Todd Boehly the Friday before the final Premier League weekend. Throughout the season, Pochettino faced questions about his future and whether he had the backing of Boehly and the board. Speaking before a match against Nottingham Forest earlier this month, he mentioned that he was not unhappy at Chelsea but indicated, “it would not be the end of the world” if he left Stamford Bridge at the season's end.
Pochettino becomes the third head coach to part ways with Chelsea since Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly's ownership began in May 2022. His predecessors, Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, were also dismissed under Boehly's leadership.
