A scary incident was witnessed at Stade de la Source on Friday evening when a huge fire was observed and football fans had to be evacuated from the stadium during the match between US Orléans and Valenciennes. The event occurred during a match in the lower division and led to the halting of the match and the stadium was soon filled with black thick smoke as fans rushed out of the stadium.
It was said that the fire occurred at the refreshment bar of the stadium just before the second half of the match. As the fire grew bigger and started producing thick smoke on the pitch, the issue of dangerous fumes compelled an action. The fans in the stands started to rush out of the stadium, some of them using their scarves or T-shirts to cover their face in a bid to avoid the dangerous fumes of the fire.
The situation inside Stade de la Source quickly became tense and the view was almost completely obscured by the black mist on the pitch. The fans did not know whether the situation was serious and began to rush out of the stadium; the stewards and security personnel led the fans to the exit. However, this fire should be considered alarming, but the evacuation process looked quite organized – the fans left the burning area and went to a safe zone outside the stadium using stairs.
The away team, Valenciennes, also had to alert their fans through the social media platforms of the development. In a short message, they said, “The second half cannot start because of a fire in the refreshment bar at Stade de la Source. ” This statement meant that what many had feared had come to pass – the game was not going to continue.
While the fire was quite frightening for those who witnessed it, no severe injuries were reported in the aftermath of the occurrence. The audience applauded the quick response of the stadium workers and other relevant authorities in ensuring that all the people were evacuated from the possibly dangerous event.
The cause of the fire Is still unknown at this stage, but there might be investigations to be conducted. For now, the concern is to attend to the survivors and tally the losses due to the fire.
